Bornin Budapest in1910, Alexander Lenard was a graduateof
thefamous Theresianum inVienna. A refugee from Hitler who
migratedtoBrazil byway of Rome, he worked variously asa phar­
macist,math teacher, quizshow contestant, farmer,painter, poet,
andpianist aswell as, course, of a translator. Atthe time of his
deathin1972 he was fluentintwelve languages. Winnie IllePu was
theproduct ofover seven years ofwork, beginingwitha German
translationofthe famous classic in1951, on which A.
personallycongratulated him.
