文档介绍:How to learn English?
Professor Chen Lin
Well, if I should introduce myself, I should say I am a student of the English language and also a teacher of the English language. Probably, the first title is more important than the second one, because if we should learn a foreign language, we should learn it all our lives. So for the whole life, I’m a student of the English language; but for the past years, I’ve been teaching that language, so I’m also a teacher of that language. But, what I want to tell you is, if you want to be a good teacher of a foreign language, first of all, you should be a good student of it. Do you agree with me? Thank you very much. And your response shows that you understand me.
OK, well, as I said, I’m going to start my talk with a little story about myself. And that is when I was leaving my college, and when I was … decided to e a teacher, a teacher of mine, a professor of mine, told me that I should remember the three UPs. U-P, U-P, up. And he said, “If you want to e a good teacher, you must always remember three UPs.” And I said, “What is the first up?” He said, “The first up is to stand up. In the classroom, you should never sit down.” And I said, “What is the second up?” He said, “The second up is to speak up.” To speak up means to speak in a very loud voice. Because you know, sometimes the classroom might be very big. And you know, many many years ago, when I started teaching, we didn’t have this in the classroom. So the poor teachers had to shout, had to speak up. Well, as to the third up, I’m not going to tell you now. I will tell you about it at the end of my talk, OK?
OK. So, ladies and gentlemen, am I speaking up? Can everyone hear? Hear me? At the back? Can you hear me at the back? OK. Well, ladies and gentlemen, I’m going to say something, which is probably not in this little booklet, to start with something which is not here. And probably I’ll translate a little bit of what I’m going to talk, into Chinese if necessary.
