摘要

众所周知,理想的语言境界应是清晰而简洁的,模糊、含混不清无论何时都
应绝对避免。然而作为自然语言的基本属性,模糊现象广泛存在于我们日常交际
中。它也毫不例外存在于政治言论、法律条文、报纸、杂志和广告等这些公众语
篇中。作为公众语篇中的一员,新闻报道形成于一定的社会条件和意识形态中,
对近期发生的事实进行报道。对同一个事件报道者可采取不同的报道方式。为确
保成功的交际,新闻报道者绞尽脑汁选取适当的语言形式,语用模糊首当其中。
语用模糊既是一种特殊的语言现象,又是一种语用策略,它在很大程度上反
映了说话人的语用意识。语用模糊现象在言语交际中十分普遍,在英语新闻中也
不例外。它在英语新闻中的存在不是偶然的,而是新闻报道者有意识做出的一种
语言选择。本文以 Halliday 的功能语法为理论框架,作者主要从概念功能和人
际功能的角度,对 2008 年发生在中国的十大事件 40 篇报道中的语言使用进行了
分析,并且从分类、转换和情态三个层面详尽探讨了中美英语新闻报道中语用
模糊的表现手段,并加以对比讨论。本文采用定性和定量的方法,语料来自中美
主要媒体《中国日报》(英文版)、《人民日报》(英文版)、《纽约时报》和
《时代周刊》网站。研究一方面发现中美两国作者在同话题的新闻报道中所采用
的表达语用模糊手段有同有异,但相同点居多,另一方面通过这种分析进一步证
明系统功能语法用于分析语篇中的语用模糊现象的可行性。此项研究从系统功能
语法这一新的视角探讨语用模糊现象,进一步丰富了前人的研究,在一定程度上
为提高人们的语言意识和培养批判性思维阅读的能力提供了一些启示。

Abstract

It monly believed that ideal language involves clarity and precision and
that vagueness and imprecision are failure to be avoided whenever possible. However,
in reality it is not quite such a case. Vague language permeates our daily
communication. As an ponent and inherent property of natural language,
vagueness inevitably appears in many public discourses such as political statements,
law documents, newspapers, magazines and advertisements, etc. Considered as kinds
of munication, they are typical examples of “language in use” and
efficient tools to influence public opinions, playing a significant part in constituting
ideologies as well as developing people’s attitudes and cognition.
News report, a type of public discourse, is produced under certain social
conditions and ideological backgrounds. It is the report of the facts that happened
recently. Its primary function is to keep people informed of the facts recently
happened. A single event can be quite differently reported to express the stances and
