Lab – puting Environment
(Estimated time: 30 min.)


Objectives:
• Demonstrate an understanding of the following:
o puter ponents
puter operating systems
o UNIX varieties and history
o The Solaris operating environment
• Investigate the use of UNIX at anization or institution
• Research UNIX powered web sites

Background:
This lab exercise will review puting environment terminology and help to reinforce concepts
introduced in Chapter 1. The student will also investigate the use of UNIX at their institution or another
organization and research web sites to see anizations are using Solaris UNIX.

Tools / Preparation:
1) Before starting this lab, the student should review Chapter 1: The puting Environment
and the chapter quiz.
2) The student should contact someone, such as an Information Technology staff member, who is
knowledgeable about the student’work. This person should be able to discuss what servers
work operating systems are in use in the student’s institution, or anization, to
find if and where UNIX is being used.
