The Art of Arguing for Beauty
--A Stylistic Analysis on Susan Sontag’s Beauty
本选题的意义及国内外研究状况:
Susan Sontag, as a famous American writer, critic and feminist, was a controversial figure in modern western. Her works ranged from nonfictions, fictions and essays, which include: Against Interprettation, On Photography, Illness as Metaphor and The Benefactor. Against Interpretation, being Susan Sontag’s most outstanding and attractive work, won her the title of “ the current acutest writer” in America. Susan Sontag was considered different in that she had a deep understanding of anesthetics and photography. The reason that I choose her work—Beauty, which was first published in Vogur magazine in 1975, is that she argued about beauty, an abstract word, in a very logical and convincing way. Meanwhile, Susan Sontag presented her art of arguing about beauty in a feminist’s perspective. By analysing analizing this text, readers can better appreaciate Susan Sontag’s fine art of arguing of an abstract word. Thus this essay can provide readers a better skill in arguing forcefully and logically.
