1 Introduction
The purpose of this talk is to survey some of the recent progress in superstring theory that
has occurred in the past few years in a way that is accessible to nonexperts. A great deal has
happened, much more than can be covered in a 40-minute talk, so difficult choices needed to
be made. Even for the topics that are included it is necessary to sacrifice depth for breadth.
All I hope to achieve is to convey a general sense of the directions in which the subject is
developing and the impressive achievements that have taken place.
The plan of this talk is as follows. First I will give a quick review of developments that
