旗袍是民国时期的妇女时装，由于满族人称为旗人，故将其称之为旗袍，从字义上解，旗袍泛指旗人（不论男女）所穿的长袍，不过只有八旗妇女日常所穿的长袍才与后世的旗袍有着血缘关系

宋美龄衣橱内的旗袍件数，大概现今的吉尼斯世界纪录无人出其右者。宋美龄的旗袍件数多，和有一个勤奋的裁缝师傅，有着相当密切的关联。这位裁缝师傅叫张瑞香，是一位男性裁缝师。张瑞香所以受到宋美龄那样爱护的原因，无非是因为手工细巧、忠心耿耿。张瑞香几乎每天都在不停赶工，为宋美龄制作旗袍，他大约每两三天就可以做好一件旗袍，做好后，张瑞香就把新旗袍捧到宋美龄面前邀功。宋美龄一般只是大略看一眼，就命人拿到自己的衣橱里妥为保管，然后便再也没见她穿过，因而，宋美龄的旗袍大概穿来穿去，总是那几套，不会有太多的更换。张瑞香除了过年除夕那天休息外，其它时间都在做衣服，而且只为宋美龄做；加上一些大小官太太们为了投其所好，送宋美龄的东西多半有衣料，这些绫罗绸缎，就够张瑞香一年忙到头。宋美龄的超大型衣柜，便成为世界最大的旗袍储藏室。
