Hierarchical Recursive PIV and Its Application on Jet Flow Research

A PIV image processing method, which can get a very high spatial resolution, was described in this paper. By
starting with a large interrogation window size and search distance as the same as normal correlation analysis
based PIV image processing method, a very high-resolution result can be achieved through hierarchical reduction
of the interrogation window size and search distance for next step iteration based on the calculation results of
former step. Such algorithm was used to do PIV imaging processing for the identification of various vortical
structures in the lobed jet mixing flow. It was found that small-scale vortical structures could be revealed clearly
in the jet flow as the spatial resolution of the PIV results increasing. These vortical structures may not be
identified in the flow field by using convention PIV image processing methods with poor spatial resolution
ability.
