1) Before discourse analysis, people concentrate on artificially constructed sentences out of context language is seen as an abstract, autonomous system and linguistics is mainly concerned with the petence rather than the performance.
Just Chomsky assumes that actual language is’ degenerate ‘ and deviates from the rules of grammar. Language is seen by discourse analyses as part of a wider social and psychological context--- language as social semiotic, social phenomenon. Part of a culture (J )
2) Sentence linguistics vs. discourse analysis
1) This term was first used in 1952 by Harris in his paper.
2) In1970s Discourse Analysis has some development---researches focusing on refrence, dexis, anaphora, context, topic, comment, cohesion and coherence, substitution etc.
3) Motivation behind its emergence and development as a discipline:
a. Influenced by the development of other subjects: the natural language processing by the use puters, sociolinguistics (Labov)
b. The development of theoretical linguistics proper makes people cast their eyes on linguistic elements beyond sentences.
c. Philosophers such as Austin, Grice, and Searle’s study of speech act
