British Education System
Purpose of Education:
Teach “the three R’s”
Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic
(Reading, ‘Riting, and ‘Rithmetic)
Teach children the rules and values they need to e good citizens

Education is state run
Between 1989 and 1990

Separated by Class:
Education was mainly for the rich
Best schools were only for the upper class
Eton and Winchester
Oxford and Cambridge (Oxbridge)
Old work: an elite group of men who went to school and university together

Many of the first schools were set up by the Church
Attendance was voluntary
Effects can still be seen today:
Religious education still part of school

Introduced in 1989
Goal: To raise the quality of education in the UK
Subjects: English, Mathematics, science, religious education, history, geography, technology, music, art, physical education, and a modern foreign language
National tests
British Education System: Current Structure
Students must attend school from the age of 5 until they are 16 years old.
Two types of schools
State-sponsored schools (State Schools)
Privately-funded schools (Public Schools)
Private (Independent) schools get funding from the private sector and tuition fees
League Tables: Comparative rank of schools for parents to use to decide where to send their children
