作为二十世纪上半叶美国最优秀的小说家之一西奥多德莱塞越来越多
地引起现代读者的关注他的第二部长篇小说珍妮姑娘真实地反映了美国社
会的贫富悬殊一经出版就受到了评论界的好评女主人公也因其纯洁善良而
广受读者和评论家的青睐对于这样一部悲剧题材的小说长期以来众多的评
论界人士和读者都把珍妮的悲剧仅仅归结为当时社会的残酷和阶级的差别这一客
观的外部原因而忽略了其主观内在原因即主人公的性格本文试图以弗洛伊德的
精神分析理论对小说的主人公珍妮的心理行为进行分析从而进一步探讨造成其
悲剧的内在根源文章的主体部分共分四章分别分析了女主人公从满足对物质
生活的渴望到对现实困难的软弱妥协以及对爱情婚姻的幻想到最后的悲剧人生
的悲惨结局通过对主人公的心理行为的分析本文旨在帮助人们从一种新的视
角来认识造成其悲剧的内在根源

Abstract
Abstract
Regarded as one of the pre-eminent American novelists of the first half of the
twentieth century, Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) draws more and more attention of
recent readers. Jennie Gerhardt is Dreiser’s second novel, which brought the author first
mercial ess. The novel is much more published than his first novel —Sister
Carrie and well received by critics. The protagonist, Jennie, is loved by both the reader
and critics for her purity, tenderness and her self-sacrificing for the whole family.
Traditionally, the novel is considered by critics as a tragedy of society and class. In this
thesis, Freud’s psychoanalysis about the personality is applied to analyze the
protagonist’s behavior and deep thought to understand her behavior and attitude towards
life from a fresh point of view. The main body is divided into four chapters, with each part
dealing with a different aspect of the protagonist’s tragedy from the point of personality.
The first chapter deals with the protagonist’s inner desire for luxury with the illustration
of theory of Freud’s psychoanalysis about the personality; the second chapter is
concerned with Jennie’s submission to difficulties as well as the rich men around her to
satisfy her desire for the material; the third chapter discusses Jennie’s illusive love
towards men from the upper class; and the last chapter is the conclusion indicating
Jennie’s own responsibility for her tragedy from the point of her personality
