Estimation of Breeding Values
1
Basic principles of estimating breeding values
To remove the environmental influence as much as possible
standardizing environment
adjusting environmental effects using statistical methods
To use all information available
To maximize the correlation between estimates and true values
2
Model for estimating breeding values
3
Method of selection index
Theoretical formula
yi = phynotypic value of the ith information resource
Each information resource may contain multiple individuals of the same type
Each individual may have multiple observations
i = mean of the population to that the information resource belongs
bi = Weight (regression coefficient) for the ith information resource
4
Method of selection index
Principle for determining b: to make rAI maximum, or equivalently to make Var(A - I) minimum
5
Method of selection index
Accuracy of the estimate
6
Selection index: single information resource
Equivalent to phenotypic selection!
Individual’s own single record
7
Mean of the individual’s own n records
Selection index: single information resource
8
Mean of the parents’ single record
Selection index: single information resource
9
Mean of single records of n full-sibs
Selection index: single information resource
