Consumers and Food Safety Problems: an European View
Food Safety has e a top-of-the-mind issue with European consumers.
The reasons change, but there are always new cases:
1960+ fear of pesticides (DDT)
1970+ fear of additives (E-Nr.)
1980+ fear of mycotoxins (aflatoxin)
1990+ fear of BSE
2000+ fear of contaminants from packaging (BADGE, SEM, ESBO), heat-formed toxic substances (acrylamide)...
Once a problem emerges, it tends to stay around!

Pesticides
Pests are often climate-, crop and season specific.
Regulations for pesticide application are local.
Regulations for pesticide residues are national.
The problems for imported produce are evident!
Example: Pesticide residues on Spanish peppers
35 imports analysed at SQTS (March 2002):
4 had no residues,
10 had allowed residues, within limits,
21 had residues, allowed in Spain but not authorised in Switzerland.

Sulfonamides: 676 samples tested 91 positive (13%) 46 over the limit
Streptomycin: 432 samples tested 55 positive (13%) 31 over the limit
Chloramphenicol: 258 samples tested 85 positive (33%) 44 over 1 ppb (no limit!!)
Tetracyclin 562 samples testedOxytetracyclin: 47 positive (8%) 16 over the limit
