Project Hope, which was first launched(启动) in October 1989, is a nationwide(全国性) educational project to help mainly school dropouts in outlying(偏僻的), poor areas to return to school. Project Hope has attracted the attention and support of all social circles(社会各界). Deng Xiaoping wrote the inscription(题词) “希望工程(Project Hope) ” on September 5, 1990, memorate(纪念) the activity. On November 12, 1991, Jiang Zemin, general-secretary of munist Party of China (CPC), wrote: “Supporting Project Hope and caring for the growth of children”. The main tasks of Project Hope in the future will concentrate(集中) on building more Hope schools, strengthening (加强)the training of teachers of these schools, equipping the schools puters and related education software,
and developing long-range (远程)education.

“大眼睛”苏明娟
1991年4月,摄影记者解海龙深入安徽采访希望工程,在众多的泥孩子中发现一双闪亮的“大眼睛”,拍下了《我要读书》这张极具感染力的照片,推出了全国希望工程形象代表———“大眼睛”姑娘苏明娟。 13年过去了,苏明娟现在是安徽大学职业技术学院的学生。如今,她已从一个“希望工程”的受益者,成为“希望工程”的参与者。     7月1日,苏明娟与她的同学们一起来到安徽省金寨县梅山镇清水村清水小学进行暑期社会实践。苏明娟说,她明年毕业后就要工作了,她要尽自己的能力使面临失学的孩子重返课堂。苏明娟还走上该县梅山镇骏马希望小学的讲台,为山里娃上了一堂生动的数学课,并给孩子们讲述了爱因斯坦等中外科学家的故事,以自己的成长经历和全国希望工程资助的第一个大学生、第一个博士研究生、该县南溪镇茅畈村张宗友的事迹勉励孩子们刻苦学习,将来回报社会。     她还资助了该小学的三年级学生陈思。小陈思的家人对孩子说:“苏明娟资助你上学,你一定要以苏老师为榜样,好好学习!” (闻哲)     《人民日报海外版》 (2004年07月08日 第四版)
