HISTORY OF THE VAREŠ MINE
Mining in the area of Vareš began as early as the 11th century
The first industrial production of ore dates back to the arrival of Austria in Bosnia, and the first blast furnace was installed in 1891
In the period from 1890 to 1945, 4,732 million tonnes of ore were extracted
In the period from 1945 to 1992, 51,706 million tonnes of ore were extracted from three open pits
Brezik 12,750 million tonnes
Droškovac 10,565 million tonnes
Smreka 28,390 million tonnes
The mine ceased with activities when the war erupted in 1992, and the electrical power supply was cut off

When the pumps stopped working, the Smreka and Droškovac open pits were flooded and the Brezik open pit caved in due to natural forces
In 1998, the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Industry of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted a Decision on temporary conservation of all three open pits for an unlimited period
The Vareš mine is not currently conducting ore extractions
