曲靖市位于云南省东北部，东与贵州省、广西壮族自治区毗邻，南与文山州、红河州接壤，西与昆明市、东川市连接，北靠昭通市和贵州毕节地区，是边疆中的内地。素有“云南咽喉”之称的曲靖，距省会昆明市135公里，地区面积33,821平方公里，地形地貌多样，民族风情各异。来到这里您可以可领略到彝、壮、苗、瑶等各民族独特的语言、服装、风俗和信仰。主要风景名胜有珠江源、千佛塔及罗平多依河、九龙瀑布群、鲁布革风景区等。
曲靖火车站建设于1966年，是贵昆线上客货运输的重要枢纽，是云南通往东部和整个中原地区的东大门，还是云南仅次于昆明站的最大客货运输大站。46年间，曲靖火车站为曲靖地区经济、社会发展作出了巨大贡献，为市民出行提供了极大方便。
2007年6月1日昆明至曲靖城际列车的开通使得昆明曲靖两城实现同城效应，它如同一条无形的纽带，将昆明与曲靖间的距离缩短，并在加深两地商务、文化交流方面扮演了重要角色。
