Two ways of improving clarity:
Putting the subject at the start.
Splitting a long sentence into two shorter sentences.

Putting the subject at the start.
1. “When we had read the sentence carefully, it was easier to understand.”
Better
2. “It was easier to understand the sentence when we had read it carefully.”
Or
3. “The sentence was easier to understand when we had read it carefully.”
BUT alternative 3 is in the passive tense. Generally less lively than the active.
Splitting a long sentence into two shorter sentences.
Remember
“The lazer beam was red and could be used to make attractive patterns.”
“The lazer beam was very intense so the engineers needed to be careful. ”
Together
“The lazer beam was red and could be used to make attractive patterns but it was very intense so the engineers needed to be careful. ”
The Introduction is the real start of the paper

(Review of what has already been published on the general subject)
Each of these stand alone
Introduction – Methods – Results - Discussion
All go together
