Originally written in Portuguese(葡萄牙） by its Brazilian-born author, it has been translated into at least 67 languages.

A boy named Santiago used to be a shepherd（牧羊人） in his 
living countryside. He gets the same dream twice both of which
are about the treasure in Egypt.
A gypsy（吉普赛） woman and an old man suggest him to find 
what the treasure is. The old one encouraged him if he wants 
something, the entire universe will conspire in helping him 
to achieve it. On the way to the treasure, Santiago meets two 
helpful men. One is an owner of a crystal store who hired the boy
for one year long. It’s an impressive plot that the merchant says 
the word “Maktub” to the boy which has a sense that the fate is 
already written.
The journey keeps going on after Santiago earns enough money.

He then makes friends with an Englishman who joined a 
caravan at the same time. 
The man’s persistence of finding the truth of alchemy（点金术）
and the passion of knowledge strongly encourage Santiago to
carry out his dream. When the Englishman tries hard to find 
where the alchemist is in a desert oasis（绿洲）, Santiago 
realizes his true love there with a young woman called Fatima. 
It’s important to find what the Personal Legend（天命） is, but
the journey of finding seems to end here with this girl. However, 
girl asks the boy to see her as a part of his Personal Legend 
and continue to search for it. And she will wait for him.

Then, the journey starts again but the danger and 
difficulty are greater than before. Thanks to the help of 
an alchemist in the oasis, Santiago finally ends up work
to the Personal Legend and finds the treasure, not in
Egypt but in Spain where he starts from.
