I. I ntroducti on
The En glish author Jane Auste n lived from 1775 to 1817. Born on December 16th, 1775 at Steventon, Hampshire, England. Austen was one of eight children of an English clergyman, and give n the accomplishme nts of her no vels. She was educated mainly at home. At an early age she began writing sketches and satires of popular novels for her family's entertainment. As a clergyma n's daughter from a well-c onn ected family, she had ample opport unity to study the habits of the middle class, the gen try, and the aristocracy. She lived a remarkably quiet and domestic life in the rural south of En gla nd. She n ever married and was on ly 41 whe n she died.
Jane Austen's novels were witty, warm and ironic portraits of the privileged classes of 18th- and 19th-ce ntury En gla nd. Her no vels are highly prized not only for their light irony, humor, and depict ion of con temporary En glish country life, but also for their un derly ing serious qualities.
