以网络为核心的信息时代，要实现信息化就必须依靠完善的网络，因为网络可以非常迅速地传递信息。因此网络现在已经称为现代社会发展的一个重要基础，对社会生活的很多方面以及对社会经济的发展已经产生了不可估量的影响。

计算机网络：就是利用通信设备和线路将地理位置不同的、功能独立的多个计算机系统互连起来，以功能完善的网络软件（即网络通信协议、信息交换方式、网络操作系统等）实现网络中资源共享和信息传递的系统。
这个简单的定义可以看出，计算机网络涉及到四个方面的问题。
