In order to get a better understanding of different cultures and facilitate cross-cultural communication, we have to learn more about other cultures that we may encounter. Langua ge is a mirror of cu lture; hence studying language is a good way to find out cultural differences. This study was conducted to examine the speech act of refusal and refusal strategy. Based on Austin and Searle’s speech act theory, Goffman’s face theory, Brown and Levinson’s and Gu Yugueo’s politeness princi ple, the study made parison on the use of refusal strategies in TV series by Chin ese and British people so as to discover the cultural differences between these two countries and the underlined factors that influence the choice of refusal strategies. This research studied 200 refusal situations in total, 100 collected from three Chinese TV series and the other 100 collected fr om three British TV series. Then the data was gr ouped based on Beebe, et al.’ s classification of refusal
