In the late seventeenth century, the Reverend Increase Matter, probably the most influential Puritan minister of his time, said that alcohol was "a good creature of God" and that man should partake of the gift without abusing it. Everyone, men, women, and even children were drinking huge amounts of alcohol without any feeling of doing something bad. Alcohol was part of daily life. Nearly everyone was addicted to it. History of Drinking Alcohol ? However, starting in the late 1700s, some people started being concerned about the amount of alcohol that people were drinking. During the Second Great Awakening of the 1820s and 30s, people started drinking less. By 1833, 6000 societies for prohibition were formed in several states. Many Protestant churches started supporting antiliquor movements. The Prohibition Movement ? The Prohibition Movement actually started from the early 19 th century, but at the time it was just a moral value of personal choice; ? The Prohibition Movement is essentially considered as a social reform movement aimed at revive the traditional culture and values; ? The 18 th Amendment took effect on January 17 th ,1920,which means drinking in public is prohibited by law; Reasons for Prohibition ? 1. Industrialization and urbanization brought American more opportunities and challenges ;but on the other hand, made class divisions more obvious and interpersonal relationships more eptable; as a result, the sense of responsibility to the family and society decreased , alcoholism and drunkenness disturbed the social order; every year ,more than 4000 people lost their lives because of public drunkenness Reasons for Prohibition ? are the places for gambling, prostitution, illegal trades, and alcohol is a must ; ? development of wine trade and huge profits it brought made many officials involved and corruption
