Chapter 8
Fresco
This chapter will deal with the use of a couple of
Photoshop filters. There are many choices of filters, and there are plug-ins for
Photoshop as well as other software programs. The number of possible effects is nearly
limitless. To help narrow the field a little, these lessons will apply only a couple of the
mon filters. They are particularly suited to the old-fashioned style of some
of the other lessons you've seen in this book. The Fresco filter is what we will use in
these lessons.
Figure shows the original photograph that was used to create the opening image
on the opposite page. The original is only 640 × 480 pixels, 300K pixels (which is
equal to ). As reproduced here, you can see that this image is not sharp enough
nor does it have enough pixels to make a good-quality image.
Figures and show an enlarged section of both the original and the final image
to show you the detail that is possible even when using a low-quality and small origi-
nal image. The lessons that follow will show you how to do it.

Lesson —Applying a Single Filter
This is the easiest method. Open your image in Photoshop. Next, enlarge your image
to its final size. In this case, the original is inches by inches at 300 ppi (pixels
per inch). It was enlarged to 8 inches by inches, also at 300 ppi, by using Bicubic
Smoother. Bicubic Sharper is best used for reductions in size. Next the filter is applied:
Filter > Artistic > Fresco. Figure shows the Filter Selection menu. Figure shows
