PURITY TESTS
Saponification value Transfer about 1 g of the sample, accurately weighed, into a 250-ml
Erlenmeyer flask, and add 25 ml of ethylene glycol, 35 ml of N ethanolic
potassium hydroxide, and a few glass beads. Reflux for one h, using a
water condenser, then rinse the condenser with water and cool. Add 1 ml of
phenolphthalein TS and titrate with N hydrochloric acid. Perform a blankdetermination but do not reflux. The difference between the volumes, in ml
of N hydrochloric acid consumed in the actual test and in the blank
titration, multiplied by and divided by the weight, in g, of the sample
taken, is the saponification value.
