对教师而言，教学与科研密切联系、相互促进，但是两者又有区别，教学主要是阐述传授已知的知识；科研主要是探索未知的知识。比如，教师研究如何科学地改革教学内容和方法是做学问，工人改进和发明新技术是做学问，管理人员研究科学的管理方法也是做学问。可见，传授已知的知识其中也有创造性的劳动，但相对少一些、简单一些；做学问不但要学习前人积累的知识，更要探索前人未知的领域，创造新的知识，其中的创造性劳动更多一些，因而困难和风险也就更大一些。世界各国之所以都给高级知识分子和高级技术工人以较高的工资待遇，原因就在这里。随着知识经济的发展，高级知识分子和高级技术工人的社会地位和物质待遇还会逐步提高。
二、怎样读书、做学问
这个问题是上一个问题的合乎逻辑的延伸。怎样读书、做学问？古往今来，国内外许多大学者、大思想家都从不同的方面总结过读书、做学问的方法，要把这些方法比较全面准确地归纳出来很不容易，即使能全面归纳出来，在这个演讲中也不可能都讲到。
