湖泊湿地萎缩严重，调蓄能力大幅下降，截止2008年初，“千湖之省”的湖泊数量(100亩以上)已锐减至574个；鸟类、鱼类等生物资源的种类和数量显著减少； 7hm2／人，低于全国平均水平( hm2／人)；高强度的经济社会活动，对矿产资源大规模开发，以及城市建设、公路和水利基础设施建设对天然植被的破坏和地表的扰动，导致我省水土流失面积占全省国土面积的30％以上，部分区域地面塌陷、滑坡、泥石流等地质灾害时有发生；洪涝灾害和旱灾并存，血吸虫病防疫形势严峻；农村生态环境保护基础薄弱，过度施用农药、化肥，使得污染物在农村环境，特别是土壤中大量残留，导致农村生态环境质量下降，生态系统功能退化的趋势尚未得到有效遏制。
3．环境状况不容乐观
我省长江、汉江部分支流受到污染，省控湖泊呈现富营养化趋势，武汉市湖泊50％以上劣于V类，汉江中下游流域多次发生“水华”，四湖流域农业面源污染严重；同时除长江、汉江干流尚充裕少量化学需氧量(COD)容量外，其他河流水环境容量已基本告罄，“优于水而忧于水”的矛盾较为突出。
