We can use the passive voice when 1. it is obvious who performs the action 2. we do not know or cannot remember who performed the action. 3. we think the action is more important than the person who performs the ac tion. Step 3 Teaching 1. Ask Ss to read the thre e examples of the passive voice and to circle the verb in each one (are taught, was sold and are sold) 2. In each of the exampl es, ask Ss to identify the doer of the verb, ., ‘ Word processing skills are taught in puter lessons. ’(The teacher, presumably) ‘ The printer was sold already. ’( We do not know who did it.) ‘ Educational CD-ROMs are sold in many countrie s.’(Many different people) stronger classes, ask students to try to change the example sentences into the passive voice . . The teacher teaches word processing skills in puter lessons. Someone sold the printer yesterday. Shops sell educational CD-ROMs in many co untri es. 4.
