基于层层授权、各司其职的思想，近年来应用较广的企业信息管理系统〔MIS〕、ERP等。这些软件使企业高层很方便地了解企业采购，销售，库存以至财务的情况，企业的中层到底层都置于了最高层的管理监督之下。因此这类软件大多上级对下级控制有余，同级与同级的部门与人员协作交流缺乏。控制太多，人就会变成机器，工作就缺乏乐趣，只有协作交流起来，工作就变得轻松有趣，更符合人性，更容易发挥普通人的 智慧和积极性。办公自动化软件把单位的各个部门紧密联系在一起，强化了机构内部员工之间、部门之间的信息交流与协同工作，使得机构内部的办公、业务流程都能在内部局域网或互联网上进行，相互间可以亲密地交流协作！
办公自动化的开展是一个不断进化的过程，随着电脑和网络技术的开展可以分为以下几个阶段：办公电脑化，单位有了电脑，可以打印文件，保存数据，用一些单机版软件等。办公网络化，单位的电脑有了局域网并连上了互联网，实现了资源共享，但内部缺乏秩序和平安。网络程序化，在办公网络化的根底上，有了网络办公软件的办公平台，实现了轻松有序的管理。将来还可能有网络办公的智能化，办公变得越来越轻松。

目前协同办公系统现状
目前已有不少软件公司已开发出办公系统，但目前的办公系统存在一些缺陷，使用户使用起来比拟困难，主要问题有
没有实现办公功能，只是提供信息共享的功能，员工之间工作不能协同；
平安、权限功能简单，不能灵活控制用户访问权限，容易造成重要信息的泄漏；
由于目前没有统一的工作流标准，各企业的工作模式也存在差异，所以办公协同往往采用固化工作流过程，大大的减低了工作流的灵活性。当企业在某一工作上的流程有变动，相应的流程也需要专业人员修改，提高了系统的维护难度；
系统扩展性差，当有新的业务需求时不能灵活添加业务模块；
系统可维护性差，需要由专业人员进行维护，提高了维护本钱；
