水手们在远航(set sail)之前，必须熟悉缆绳的打法(know the ropes)。他们长时间地从事划桨的苦工(be chained to the oars)，没有时间休息(rest on one's oars)，因为船长会来干预的(put one's oar in)。掌舵(take the laboring oar，take the helm)的船长最重要，须了解地形(see how the land lies)与确定风向(see how the wind blows)，决不能迷失方向(lose one's bearings)。有—天，突然碰到敌船，所有的人都清理甲板，准备战斗(clear the decks)。虽然敌强我弱，大家同处危局(in the same boat)，水手们将船旗(colors)钉在桅杆上，决不投降(nail one's colors to the mast)。最后，当胜利的旗帜高高飘扬(with flying colors)，船只返航时(when the ship comes home)，所有的人才得以开怀畅饮，喝得像风中的三条帆脚索一样东倒西歪(three sheets in the wind)。
以上****语中oar(桨)，ropes(船)，bearings(方位)，color(船旗)均为船上的用具。很多****语
已经有了引申意义，再举数例：
have an oar in everyman's boat 把桨放到每个人的船里——爱管闲事
miss the boat误船——失去时机

三、海难的****语
航海常常伴随着危险，因而英语航海****语中有不少有关沉船海难的****语。很多****语已经 有了引申意义。如：
(1)all at sea:船在海上失去控制，只得随风漂流。现在这一****语的含义是“不知所措〞的 意思。例如：
He is all at sea as what to say next. (他简直不知道下一步该说什么。)
(2)get into deep water：陷于深水之中。现在这一****语的含义是“陷于困境〞的意思。例如：
We'd better not talk about starting up a new company before the first one is operating smoothly, or we'll be getting into deep water．(在第一个公司未能顺利运作之前最好不要谈论建立一个新的公司，否那么我们会有新的麻烦的。)
(3)in low water:搁浅。现用来表示

“缺钱，拮据〞的意思。例如：
He spent every penny he had and was in low water．(他花完了所有的钱，十分拮据。)
(4)go by the board：桅杆顺着船舷落入海中。现比喻“安排落空；方案失败〞的意思。例如：
Some young people have let the tradition go by board．(有些年青人把老的传统抛在脑后。)
(5)all hands to the pumps：船突然漏水，所有人都去抽水。现在该****语比喻“全力以赴〞的意思。例如：
We'll need all hands to the pumps if we want to win the victory．(我们需要全力以赴才能获得胜利。)
(6)between the devil and sea：在魔鬼与海洋之间选择。现比喻“进退维谷〞的意思。例如：
I'm between the devil and the deep sea. What's to be done(我进退维谷，该怎么办)
四、“风〞(wind)的****语
英语的风(wind)与航海有关，航海行船离不开风，尤其在帆船时代，没有风无法航行，因而就有了raise the wind(找风)这一短语，引申义为
