The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture(
新古典主义 ) on Liberty Island
in New York Harbor, designed by Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue,
a gift
to the
United
States
from
the
people
of France,
is
a robed female figure
representing
liberty, who bears a torch . Upon the statue there is the date of the American Declaration
of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The Statue of Liberty has
become an symbol of freedom and welcome to the immigrants who come to the USA looking for
a better life.
