Currently, a variety of "Internet cafes" have appeared, with bad ones mixed in
with good ones. The issue of Internet cafes arouses the attention of educators and
teachers as well as parents. They express concern over unhealthy tendencies and
negative effects of Internet cafes. Some of them even call for Internet cafes to be
banned.
It is true that many problems exist with Internet cafes. Some Internet cafes are
involved in the operation of illegal gambling games and even pornographic and
obscene pictures online, which pollute the minds of juveniles as ''electronic heroin^^.
Some teenagers are so deeply entrapped by such Internet cafes that their minds are
severely distorted. They abandon their academic studies or even commit crimes.
Although Internet cafes indeed have some negative effects, they should not be
banned, because Internet cafes have made undeniable contributions to thepopularization of the Internet in China. Instead, they should be cleaned up. For
example, websites without a business license must be closed down while severe
punishment must be delivered on sites that are engaged in pornographic and other
