南朝人，字通明，号华阳隐居。丹阳秣陵人，去官隐居茅山，人称“山中宰相”。有《陶隐居集》。本文是六朝山水小品名作。
本文与南朝吴均的《与朱元思书》可称双璧，同为六朝山水名作。
