Pre-Reading Task
Listen and answer

Main idea of Text A
It would be ideal if we can strike a balance between the Chinese and the Western learning styles.
The structure of the text
Part 1 the beginning (Paras1~ 5) About the incident.
Part 2 the body (Paras6 ~ 13)
About the author′s thoughts on the incident.
Part 3 the end (Para14)
A suggestion of the author.
Two different attitudes
What is the attitude of the author & his wife toward Benjamin`s efforts in inserting the key into the slot?
And the hotel staff`s?
Hint:
They let him explore & enjoy himself.
They held his hand & taught him how to insert the key correctly.
Two different ways to learn
Chinese: show a child how to do sth, or teach by holding his hand;
Americans: teach children that they should rely on themselves for solutions to the problems.
Attitudes to creativity &skills
Chinese: give greater priority to developing skills at an early age, thinking creativity can be promoted over time;
Americans: put more emphasis on fostering creativity in young kids, thinking skills can be picked up later.
Two methods parison & contrast
One-side-at-a-time method: examine one subject thoroughly and then start the other; (see Paras6 &7)
Point-by-point method: examine two subjects at the same time, discussing them point by point. (see Paras11~13)
