Dumas got the idea for The Count of Monte Cristo from a true story.
The true one related to the story of a shoemaker who was engaged to a rich woman, but four jealous friends accused him of being a spy for England. He was imprisoned for seven years. During his imprisonment ,a dying fellow prisoner bequeathed(遗赠) him a treasure hidden in an island. So he took possession of the treasure after he was released and returned to Paris in the name of another person and spent ten years plotting his essful revenge against his former friends.
Main plots
The Count of Monte Cristo mainly told the revenge of a young man named Edmond Dantes, a young sailor who is falsely accused of treason and is arrested on his wedding day and imprisoned on the island far from his home.
After staging a strange friendship with a priest who knows a mysterious hidden treasure and a dramatic escape ,he sets out to discover the fabulous treasure of Monte Cristo and returns to his hometown with the name-- The Count of Monte Cristo .He soon catches up with his enemies and begins his revenge with this fortune he found.
It is a novel of enormous tension and excitement,Monte Cristo is a tale of obsession and revenge.

He use power and wealth to punish those who false accused him(mainly 3 people), but he also spare no effort to help his old benefactor(恩人) .And he rescued a innocent girl—his personal enemy’s daughter from the disaster.
