To plan each step in operations, so as to work out the quantity of material, manpower, machine and money for producing pre-determined level of output in given period of time.
To establish the operations, their path and sequence. The type of machines and personnel required are also worked out.
To work out time required to perform each operation and also time required to perform the entire series as routed.
To assign work to operators at their machines or work places based on the schedule plan as per the routing worked out.

To issue production orders for starting the operations. It involves movement of materials, movement of tools and fixtures, performance of work on each operation, recording of time and cost involved, movement of work from one operation to another, inspection or supervision of work.
To monitor progress, identify problems (. bottlenecks, delays, deviations, defects, over/under-loading of work) and rectify them to pletion of work by planned date.
To ensure quality of output.
To adjust routing, reschedule work, change workloads, carry out repairs and maintenance of machinery or equipment, take personnel decisions (. training, transfer) as corrective actions.
