Abstract
Objective:Toexploretheratesandcharacteristicsofself-harmacrosstheKimberleyregionofWesternAustralia.
Method:Retrospective,cross--harm
datafromtheKimberleyDistrictoftheWesternAustraliaPoliceForce(2014–2018)andtheEmergencyDepartment
DataCollection(June2017–December2018).Variablesincludedage,sex,Indigenousstatus,timeofincident,and
alcoholanddruguse.
Results:Therateofemergencydepartmentattendanceforself-harmwasthreetimeshigherintheKimberleythan
-
centageofincidentsinvolvingAboriginalpeople,withhighestratesinthe15–19and20–
80%ofself-harmeventsrecordedbypoliceinvolvingindividualsaged25–-
harmincidentsoccurredintheeveningandatnight.
Conclusions:Theratesofself-harmacrosstheKimberleyregionfrom2014–
fundingandalignmentofservicestomeetregionalneedarerequiredaspartofaholisticefforttoreduceregional
ratesofself-harm.

Methodsratesofself-harmincidentsinthe15–19yearagegroup,
followedbyage20–24years(Table2).
Thisstudywasaretrospective,cross-sectionalauditof
routinelycollectedself-harmdataobtainedfromtheOfself-harmincidentsrecordedbypolice,92%involved
KimberleyDistrictoftheWAPoliceForce(WAPF)andtheAboriginaland/orTorresStraitIslanderpeopleand57%
WADepartmentofHealthEmergencyDepartmentDatainvolvedfemales(Figure1).Theratesinlocalgovern-

Alcoholand/ordrugswererecordedasbeinginvolvedin
65%ofself-harmeventsattendedbypolice(90%of
theserecordedalcoholonly).Alcohol-relatedself-harm
eventswereslightlymorecommononFridayand
Saturdayevenings,andmostcommoninindividuals
agedbetween25and50yearswherealmost80%ofself-
harmeventswererecordedasinvolvingalcohol.
Discussion
Ourfindingscontributetoanunderstandingofself-

resultsbuildfromthe12-monthKimberleyself-harm
dataauditof20143,8anddemonstratethatovera4-year
periodratesofself-harmacrosstheregionremainunac-
,particularlyAboriginal
youngpeopleandAboriginalpeopleaffectedbyalcohol,
areover-representedintheself-,our
findingsshowalargeamountofself-harmingoccurring
intheeveningandatnight.
ThedeeplycomplexdriversofAboriginaldistressandself-
harmingrequireurgentresourcinginamannerthatsup-
