CREATING VALUE IN BANKING
PREFACE
Superior value creation petitive advantage are the goals of management. The Boston Con-
sulting Group (BCG) has for many years analyzed the drivers of value creation for clients across in-
dustries. In recent years, we have published annual studies to analyze the world’s top performing
companies to build our understanding of such leading players.
Banking is changing rapidly as the industry consolidates and as financial markets e more
global petitive. Rigorous concentration on profitability and growth are more important than
ever for senior financial executives. In today’s uncertain markets, it is critical for banks to understand
and manage market expectations, and to manage the portfolio of businesses as well as possible.
This year, for the first time, in response to requests from financial services clients, we are publishing
Creating Value in Banking, which analyzes shareholder value creation in the banking industry. We
plan to publish this study annually, and expect to broaden it next year to cover the insurance industry.
