Father: a German immigrant;a Catholic farmer; move to America to escape the conscription(征兵); treat children severely, only to make them distant from him.
Dreiser: born in Terre Haute, Indiana,on August 27, 1871, to Sarah and John Paul Dreiser, a strict Catholic family; the 12th of 13 children; unhappy childhood influenced by the whole family.
Life Experience
Brothers/Sisters: drift into drunkness, promiscuity and squalor; two of his sisters were seduced; His older brother: the popular songwriter, Paul Dresser a pattern for Dreiser.

Kyra Markham: lived with her, who was an actress and painter, much younger than him, in the 1930s.
Helen Richardson: met his cousin . in 1919, with whom he began an affair with sado-masochistic elements; eventually married on June 13, 1944.
Marriage (love affairs)
Kyra Markham (1891–1967) was an actress, figurative painter and printmaker.
1892: wrote for the Chicago Globe newspaper and then the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, which prepared a lot for his later writing.
1900: Sister Carrie«嘉莉妹妹»
Later he had a spiritual crisis, which people think was caused by the contradiction among writing, making a living and family.
1903: began writing again, working for several newspapers
1911: Jennie Gerhardt «珍妮姑娘»
In the next 15 years his writing career reached a peak, when he finished most of his main works.
