History of the mittee and its Membership
The mittee was established as mittee on Banking Regulations and Supervisory Practices by the central-bank Governors of the Group of Ten countries at the end of 1974 in the aftermath of serious disturbances in international currency and banking markets (notably the failure of Backhaus Hastatt in West Germany). The first meeting took place in February 1975 and meetings have been held regularly three or four times a year since.

International Convergence of Capital Measurement and Capital Standards
The central bank governors of the Group of Ten (G10) and the heads of the supervisory authorities in these countries met on 26 June, 2004 and endorsed the publication of the International Convergence of Capital Measurements and Capital Standards: A Revised Framework Basel II.
In a special meeting at the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), the Framework adopted by the mittee on Banking Supervision was approved and released for publication.
The purpose of the Basel Capital Accord is:
Promote safety and soundness of the financial system.
Ensure adequate level of capital in international banking system.

What is Basel II?
Credit Risk – the risk associated with lending money
Basel II attempts to stabilize the world’s economy by defining rules which, if followed, would ensure that banks manage their risks well.
Basel II addresses two main issues
Operational Risk – the risk associated with the manner
in which a bank conducts its daily business.
