⒈ Compound (复合词)
Exercise 1: Do you know the following words?
loudspeaker, gatekeeper, lifeboat, shellfish, fireplace, wardrobe, watchtower, checkout, roller-skating, glass-topped, roundtrip, takeaway, secondhand, halfway, two-storey, chopsticks, get-together, watchmaking, sleep-pills, pickpocket, shorthand, white-face, die-hard, go-between, forget-me-not, waterproof …
Exercise 2: Please list as pound words as possible without any repetition.

⒉ Derivation (派生法)
Different pounds, derivation shows the relation between stems and affixes. You may have noted that in English there are morpheme which change the category, or grammatical class of words. For instance:
Noun --> adjective affection + ate, alcohol + ic
Other derivational morphemes do not change grammatical class, as in:
semi + final, sub + marine, re + establish, ex + president
As noted, many prefixes fall into this category, similarly, we find suffixes of this type, as in:
physic + ian, fad + ism, Americ + an, fash + ion
