【Abstract】English riddles are an affluent cultural treasure of English speaking country. The
keys as well as fun of riddles and humors are simply from the language per se. Thus, the middle
school students as the elementary or secondary English learners will definitely be beneficial for a
mand of language and culture by learning English riddles.
By applying English riddles, we could add some fun in the traditional English teaching; it
therefore is able to kill two birds with one stone, which is ignored by many teachers. On the one
hand, it can enliven the class by means petition or games. On the other hand, it can improve
the students’ language level and elaborative faculty by osmosis. By studying riddles students can
get into the deep level of the English culture. My thesis aims at the characteristics of English
riddles according to which we applied them in the middle school English teaching.

【摘要】英语谜语来源于民间生活和文学作品,历史悠久,形式多样,语言知识丰富。它
们既具有趣味性又具有知识性。若能恰当地运用在英语教学中,既可提高学生学****英语的兴
趣,又能帮助学生更好地掌握语言知识,了解西方文化,锻炼思维能力,从而更好地运用语
言达到交际的目的。
