This study is a contribution to the debate on the relationship between FDI and growth. The idea that the alleged link between FDI and growth is rather the consequence of both FDI and growth responding endogenously to economic integration is tested empirically. The results confirm precisely this point: it is not FDI as such but economic integration, in any form or shape that determines growth.
Introduction
The relationship between FDI and growth is one of the most intensively researched issues in international economics. There is a fair amount of evidence suggesting hat there exists a positive relationship between these two quantities, albeit with some qualifications (see, among others, Borenzstein et al. 1998). More controversial has been the issue whether underpinning such a positive relationship there is causality running from FDI to growth or not. One recent twist on this debate has been provided recently by Ting Gao (2005).
