1. Paragraph writing
A topic sentence consists of a topic and its controlling ideas.
The sentence states the main idea of a paragraph. It not only names the topic (who or what) of the paragraph, but also limits the topic to one or two areas.

Controlling idea
A controlling idea is the main thought of a paragraph. It serves to control and limit the development of a paragraph. Any sentences, words or groups of words that are not related to the controlling idea should be taken away to keep the paragraph a unified one.
What is a controlling idea?
What are the basic requirements of a controlling idea?
The most important requirement of a controlling idea is being specific. It should be specific enough to control and limit the development of a paragraph and at the same time specific enough to tell how the paragraph is to be developed.
Example:
TOO GENERAL: I can patch a bicycle tire myself.
COMMENT: The italicized part can be taken as the controlling idea of the topic sentence. It is, in fact, a general statement and it does not tell how the paragraph is to be developed.
IMPROVED: I can patch a bicycle tire in several simple steps.
Ex. 1 Write down the controlling idea for each of the topic sentences given below. Then give an outline of what might be discussed in the paragraph according to the controlling idea.
Example:
TOPIC SENTENCE: There are several reasons why I decided e to college.
CONTROLLING IDEA: several reasons
OUTLINE:
1. To get a college degree
2. To make friends of my age
3. To learn new things
2. Parents have different ways of giving their children an education.
CONTROLLING IDEA: different ways of education
