In the following article, Ronald Duska discusses highly visible public concerns about ethical misbehaviour in the financial services sector including accounting. He argues that accounting and investment firms have lost sight of their original mission as "guardians of integrity in financial dealings." As guardians, these firms are supposed to play a fiduciary role, acting on behalf of the interests of others.
In the online dictionary Wikipedia, fiduciary is defined as "a person who occupies a position of trust in relation to someone else such that he is required to act for the latter's benefit within the scope of that relationship. In business or law, it generally means someone with specific duties, such as those that attend a particular profession or role, ., investment advisor or trustee." In other words, protecting the interests of clients is supposed to take priority over the fiduciary’s self-interest. When such individuals or firms fail to fulfill their fiduciary role, they lose the trust of clients and the general public.
It is important to note that a fiduciary relationship arises when one person (the fiduciary) has a duty to protect or promote the interests of another in some specific regard.
