Evolution of the Discipline
Geography’s name was reputedly coined by the Greek Scientist Eraosthenes over 2200 years ago from the words geo, “the earth” and graphein, “to write.” From the beginning, that writing focused both on the physical structure of the earth and on the nature and activities of the people who inhabited the different lands of the known world.

Modern geography had its origins in the surge of scholarly inquiry that, beginning in the 17th century , gave rise to many of the traditional academic disciplines we know today.
