Ⅰ. Definition of language acquisition
1)Language acquisition refers to the learners picking up a language through exposure to the natural environment. (Rod. Ellis 1999:6 Understanding Second Language Acquisition)
we learn a dialect.
2)LA refers to the natural process of children’s language development.
Acquisition refers to picking up language naturally and subconciously.
Learning refers to mastering second language through instruction in classroom.
Two Kinds of Language Acquisition
First Language Acquisition:
The process of acuqiring a native language is technically termed as first language acquisition, or simply language acquisition.(It usually refers to the children.)
Second Language Acquisition(SLA):
The processes by which people learn languages in addition to their native language is termed as second language acquisition
The expression second language is not just in contrast with first language or mother tongue in the literature. Some linguists make a distinction between a second language and a foreign language. The contrast is based on the social context. In a bilingual or munity, the language other than one's mother tongue is called a second language.
In a monolingual country, the language one learns is a foreign language. So sometimes, second language acquisition (SLA) may be defined as the process by which a language other than the mother tongue is learnt in a natural setting or in a classroom.
