Introduction
Background
This document is the executive summary of the environment impact assessment (EIA) of the WB financed project Anhui Shaying River Channel Improvement Project. It summarizes the main issues and conclusions of EIA and the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) of the project. According to Chinese EIA laws and World Bank Operational Policy Environmental Assessment, the proposed project is Category A for environmental assessment purpose, due to the scale and significance of the potential environmental and social impacts, the size and nature of the project activities, and the sensitivity of the project areas. Accordingly, a full environmental assessment was conducted.
Anhui Provincial Environmental Science Institute (APESI) prepared the project EIA by then project owner Fuyang Port and Navigation Bureau (FPNB) at the project feasibility study stage. The EIA report was approved by Anhui Provincial Environmental Protection Department in 2008. Since then, the project ownership has been transferred to Anhui Provincial Port and Shipping Construction
