Background
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow set in the Dutch culture of Post-Revolutionary War in New York State. It was based on a German folk tale, which original recorded by Karl Musaus.
Characters
Ichabod Crane
he is a school teacher and singing instructor es Connecticut. his last name suits him: he is tall, lanky and sharp-featured
many critics maintain that Ichabod Crane represents the outcast artist-intellectual in American society
Brom Van Brunt
In the novel, Brom Van Brunt is a rudeman. However , he is also a kindhearted, self-reliant person. His shoulders are big and his back was wide. He is a hero to all young ladies.
Katrina Van Tassel
She is the daughter of the Dutch farmer. Her image shows a negative image. She loves to show off. Superficially, she and Ichabod are in love with each other. In fact, she just dallies with Ichabod’s affections. Just as the narrators said,” This is a trick”. Katrina is not a simple girl, but a scheming girl.
Plot
There were many stories in the quiet valley----Sleepy Hollow. But the story that people believed most was about a man who was headless, rode a horse at night. He rode through the valley, looking for his lost head.
Near Sleepy Hollow was a village called Tarry Town. The village had a small school. And Ichabod Crane() was the only teacher in it.
One of the students was Katrina Van Tassel. She was the only daughter of a rich Dutch farmer. Ichabod soon found he is interested in Katrina. But there was also another strong young man named Brom Bones loved Katrina.
One day Ichabod was invited to a big party at the Van Tassel’s home. After the party, he alone to ride to home, then meet the Headless Horseman.
The Horseman picked up his head and threw it to Ichabod. It hit Ichabod’s face and knocked he off his horse.
