Early Settlers (5000BC-55BC)
①The first known settlers of Britain were the Iberians. 

At about 2000 BC the Beaker Folk arrived from the areas now know as Holland
The Celts
Began to arrive about 700 BC
They came from eastern and central Europe, now France, Belgium and southern Germany.
Practiced farmers.
Ancestors of the Scots, the Irish and the Welsh.
Roman Britain
Julius Caesar (Roman general) invaded Britain in 55BC.
Roman Emperor Claudius invaded Britain in 43AD.
Britain was under the Roman occupation for nearly 400 years.
Built work of towns.
Withdrew in 410 AD.
The Anglo-Saxons
Angles, Saxons, Jutes came to Britain in the mid-5th century.
They were constantly at war with one another.
Depended on mixed economies of agriculture, hunting and animal husbandry
The Anglo-Saxons
Although the Anglo-Saxons were ferocious people, they laid the foundations of the English state.
They divided the country into shires with shire courts and sheriffs responsible for administering laws.
They devised a new farming system which continued until the agricultural revolution in the 18th century.
The Viking and Danish Invasions
The Vikings and the Danes from Denmark attacked England from the end of the 8th Century.
Alfred, King of Wessex, defeated Danes and they came to an agreement in 879.
The Danes gained control of the north and east England while Alfred would rule the rest.(Danelaw)

The Norman Conquest(1066)
William Ⅰ, Duke of Normandy, conquered England in 1066.
He confiscated almost all the land and gave it to his Roman followers.
He established a strong Norman government.
Feudal system was established in England.
Norman Rule(1066-1381) William’s Rule(1066-1087)
The King owned all the land personally.
He gave his barons large estates in England and in return for a promise of military service and a proportion of the land’s produce.
