A Study of Translation Strategies of Passive Structures From English into Chinese
Abstract
In modern societies the rapid development of economy, science and technology
brings out the reality that crosss-munication es immense. People
with different cultures from different areas have a strong desire municate one
another. Yet because of different social backgrounds, social systems, ways of thinking,
norms of behaviors, people have many difficulties and obstacles in understanding one
another.
According to the theory of munication, the English passive
structure is a kind of special information coding method as well as a special
communication channel. So there is much information lying under the passive structure,
which would hinder munication if not handled properly in modern
translation practice. The aim of this paper is to study the English passive structure in
the process of munication by dividing the passive sentences into
different types according to the translation methods used in the process of translation.
By doing so, the paper tries to find some practical translation strategies or skills for the
passive sentences.
In this paper, the first part gives an overview on the wide use of English passive
voice and its definition, which shows the importance of this paper. In the second part,
the differences between the English and Chinese passive voice are introduced as a
theory support to the third part of this paper, which is the analysis of the English
passive voice and its translation into Chinese. In the third part, the English passive
sentences are divided into different types. The sentences in each group are analyzed
together with their translation and thus translation methods are provided. The fourth
part involves translating passive structures in EST English for science and technology
before a brief conclusion.
